online bookstores

online bookstores

Not too long ago, online bookstores didn't exist. And now, they are such a great convenience that it's hard to imagine life without them.

At an online bookstore, you can order books for cheaper than you can at a brick and mortar bookstore. You can browse for books on topics of similar interest. You can check out other users recommendations.

Even though online bookstores are a great innovation, there is a drawback to all this convenience. Online bookstores are driving regular bookstores out of business.

And that is sad. I love online bookstores but I also hate to see brick and mortar stores closing their doors.

When I was growing up I would always go to bookstores. I would pick up the books, run my fingers over them, smell the newness of the ink on printed paper. In online bookstores, you can't do these things.

Even though online book stores try their best to personalize your experience - you miss out on the personal touch. There is no clerk you can go to ask a question. There are not coffee / cookie counters. There are no chances to personally meet some of the authors that come to town as they go through their publicity tours.

And how can online bookstores replace a library? Sometimes you just can't afford to buy a book. Or you may be interested in a book, but not interested enough to buy it. In these cases, libraries are a godsend. The books are free. The books are many. The atmosphere is relaxing. Online bookstores can't match this combination of features.
