10 Tips for Writing A Book

1) Entertain as you write - people read for information. But they also read for entertainment. Hardly no one reads an interesting topic presented in a boring way. And yet, millions will read uninteresting topics presented in interesting ways. As you write, think of ways that you can present your topic in an entertaining manner.

2) Use case studies - when writing an instructional book, try to include case studies. Case studies put a human face on the things that you are writing about. They help to make the topic more interesting and alive and make it real for the reader.

3) Make lists - readers love lists of all kinds.  For example: The 10 best dog breeds; 50 ways to leave your lover; And so on. Normally, the most popular part of David Letterman's show is his top ten list Whenever it makes sense to do so, format your items into an easily readable list.

4) Include quizzes - quizzes at the end of a chapter are an excellent teaching tool and allows the reader to measure his comprehension of the subject.

5) Leave room for notes - either throughout the book or at the end of the book, have portions of the chapters where a reader can keep his notes. It's a convenience to the reader in that it allows him to keep his book notes with the book instead of on a separate pad where it's likely to become lost.

6) Include worksheets - if applicable to your subject matter, include worksheets throughout the chapters. Worksheets, if they're not overly complex, are one of the best devices to help engage the reader into your topic.

7) Use chapter conclusions - every chapter should have a summary or conclusion chapter that helps to clearly condense the chapter's contents.

8) Choose a regular time to write - many pro writers will set aside a specific time of the day when they write. This helps to get and keep them in the habit of writing. If you're a morning person, set aside a time in the morning. Likewise if you're an evening person, set aside some time then.

9) Avoid distractions - don't try writing with the TV, DVD, or other distractions. Ideally, give your full attention to your writing task for that day. However, if you simply can't get away from all distractions - still write. Don't use distractions as an excuse not to write.

10) Don't edit as you write - editing short circuits the creative spark. You never no what interesting things you'll let pass you by if you are constantly censoring, and self-guessing, yourself as you write. There will be plenty of time to edit and rewrite when you do your second draft.
