Writing a Fiction Book

Writing has various niches. When writing a fiction book, different rules are in play than when writing a non-fiction, a biography, or other type of book.

Characterization is the key to writing a fiction book. That's why often when you hear writers being interviewed they will tell the interviewer that they let the characters write their own story. Part of learning to write real characters that come alive on the page is to become aware of people in real life.

Notice The People Around You

Start to notice the people around you, wherever they are. Watch them at the train station, bus stop, stadiums. Notice what they're wearing, their speech patterns, their mannerisms, and so forth. Television is not a good place to observe people because the cameras rarely remain on a person long enough to be useful. Become practiced at observing people and their behavior and your novel characters will start to come alive.

Reveal Facts About Your Characters Slowly

When you describe your characters to your readers, don't give their full biography all at once. Let your reader discover them gradually - the way they would learn about that person in real life. This has an advantage to you, the writer, as well. The characters that you create from your imagination are not static. They'll change and grow. You'll discover things you never knew about them as you go about writing your novel.

Who Is Your Character?

When you are writing a story, you have to know your characters. If you don't, how can you possibly know what they will do in a situation. Therefore, one of the first things that many professional writers do is to define the characters he is going to be writing about.

For example, is this person a man or woman. If a woman, how old is she? Is she single or married? Does she have a lover? What kind of personality does she have? What are her hobbies? Does she like sports? The art? Is she a city dweller or a suburbanite? It may seem trivial, but if you don't know your character intimately, how do you expect to be able to describe them well enough so that your readers will know them? The first step towards making your characters come alive is to know who they are.

Overcoming Writer's Block

One easy way to overcome wrier's block in fiction is to place one or more of your characters in a dramatic situation and try to write them out of it. By this time, you should have given them their own personalities. Simply imagine how they would react and what they would say if they were actually in that dramatic situation.  Even if the solution that you come up with is pure drek, it really doesn't matter. You've at least broken your writers block, which is the hardest part. Also, for most writers, the really hard work is done in the editing/re-writing sessions. And that's where you'll fix most of your problems.
